Star Wars: What order of movies and series to start watching the franchise? Where does Obi-Wan Kenobi fit into the Star Wars timeline?

Obi-Wan Kenobi follows the adventures of the character played by Ewan McGregor, a decade after the tragic events of Revenge of the Sith (2005), the conclusion of the prequel trilogy of Star Wars.

Obi-Wan Kenobi suffered his greatest personal defeat in the film when his closest friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), turned to the dark side of the force. They have an epic battle, with Anakin maimed by Obi-Wan and left behind as he is hit by lava. But, as we later discover, he survives and goes on to become the feared Darth Vader.

In this way, the plot of the series begins with Obi-Wan watching over/taking care of a little Luke Skywalker on the planet Tatooine while living in exile on the planet. But quickly the forces of evil begin to resurface with the return of Darth Vader - played again by actor Hayden Christensen - and he must set out on a dangerous adventure to protect Luke and the future of the universe.

Know what to watch before the Obi-Wan Kenobi series

In preparation for the launch of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the British Disney+ released a list of films and series episodes that are essential to understanding the new production of the franchise. Check out what to watch:

  • The Phantom Menace (1999)
  • Attack of the Clones (2002)
  • The Clone Wars - Movie (2008)
  • The Clone Wars - Season 2, episodes 12 - 16
  • The Clone Wars - Season 4, episodes 15 - 18
  • The Clone Wars - Season 5, episodes 14 - 16
  • Revenge of the Sith (2005)
*All Star Wars productions are available in the Disney+ catalog

Naturally, on the list, we have the Star Wars prequel trilogy (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith), where Ewan McGregor was introduced as Obi-Wan Kenobi. In addition, there is a highlight for Clone Wars, the animated movie, and some episodes of the animated series.

The series' episodes focus on Obi-Wan's arc and his relationship with Duchess Satine - indicating that the character could make her live-action debut in the series, in flashback sequences. This matches the rumors that we can see flashbacks to the Clone Wars era in Obi-Wan Kenobi. After the Clone Wars and Order 66 – which resulted in the extinction of nearly every Jedi in the universe and the establishment of the Galactic Empire in command – the Inquisitors have taken to hunting down surviving Jedi and will be looking for Kenobi throughout episodes of the series.

Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres on Disney+ on May 27.
